When a person concerned with economic rights take the pen to write a novel asks what kind of result is an economist. The author began his literary career where most beginners start with a novel. It's a way that allows the writer to explore the conflicts of life in simple uncomplicated episodes. And that's what Osi Ogbu makes a direct and concise language in this book, the moon goes down as well.
The plot revolves around a widower (Mama Oby) and daughter (Obi) Fighting for survive in a world dominated by men. The book describes how Mama Oby trying to raise their children alone while facing the demands of tradition as shown Pa Okolo. She believes in the importance of education and making every effort to help his daughter obtain university degrees.
The book can be described as a conflict between tradition, modernity and Christianity. People are constantly facing situations where their actions and words are evaluated by the three sets of values competition. In the novel, Obi Mama, a devout Catholic, Catholics and others in Isiakpu rejected the decision of the Church in Obeti who was accused of murder. It was decided to join the tradition ostracize any person accused of murder who refuses to be sworn in before the idol of the people. Igwe also must be a guardian of culture and Isiakpu tradition traditions fell when he was on his way to success. Once again the modernity represented by Oby was unclear because he was always ready to defend the views and traditional values in their discussions with Chris.
The book is an easy to understand the fiction written in a style that flows freely. Osi Ogbu addresses many vicissitudes of life, sadness, happiness, success, failure, victory and defeat in this book. Embellished the story with rich Igbo expressions, fables and proverbs.
This book was very enjoyable and I recommend without reservation. If you are looking for an African novel to read this month, also read the Moon sets.
